The serfdom organization of social labor was based on the discipline of the stick, with extreme darkness and downtrodden workers who were robbed and mocked by a handful of landlords. The capitalist organization of social labor was based on the discipline of famine, and the vast mass of workers, despite all the progress of bourgeois culture and bourgeois democracy, remained in the most advanced, civilized and democratic republics a dark and downtrodden mass of wage slaves or crushed peasants, who were robbed and mocked by a handful of capitalists. The communist organization of social labor, to which socialism is the first step, is holding on, and the further it goes, the more it will hold on to the free and conscious discipline of the workers themselves, who have overthrown the yoke of both landlords and capitalists.
This new discipline does not fall from the sky and is not born out of kind wishes, it grows out of the material conditions of large-scale capitalist production, only from them. It is impossible without them. And the bearer of these material conditions or their conductor is a certain historical class, created, organized, united, trained, enlightened, tempered by big capitalism.
