يحيي الحزب الشيوعي في الولايات المتحدة الاميركية CPUSA احتجاجات طلاب الجامعات وهم يناضلون من أجل وقف إطلاق النار في غزة وسحب الاستثمارات من الاحتلال الإسـ ر ائيـ لي لفلسـ طين. استمروا في الضغط! إننا ندين بأشد العبارات الممكنة قمع واعتقال المتظاهرين في كولومبيا وييل ونيويورك وجامعة ميشيغان وغيرها من الجامعات حيث تم سجن المئات وإيقافهم عن العمل بناءً على طلب إدارات الجامعات. نحن ندعم الحق الدستوري والديمقراطي للطلاب والشباب والعمال في التنظيم والاحتجاج ضد حرب الإبادة الجماعية التي تقودها اسـ ر ائيـ ل في غزة. ونحن نكرر مطالبهم بوقف فوري لإطلاق النار، وكذلك إنهاء الدعم المؤسسي والمادي الأمريكي للاحتلال الإسـ ر ائيـ لي لفلسـ طيـ ن. الدعم العسكري الأمريكي لإسـ ر ائيـ ل يجب أن يتوقف الآن!
وتأتي هذه الحملة في أعقاب عدد من جلسات الاستماع في الكونغرس التي استهدفت نخبة رؤساء الجامعات الخاصة والأساتذة والأمناء. ابتداءً من أواخر العام الماضي، ترأست جلسات الاستماع هذه من قبل يمين MAGA [الداعم لترامب]بدعوى القلق من معاداة السامية في الحرم الجامعي. وفي واقع الأمر، كانت هذه الجهود بمثابة محاولة لإسكات الاحتجاجات، ليس فقط ضد الإبادة الجماعية التي ارتكبتها إسـ ر ائيـ ل في فلسـ طيـ ن، بل وأيضاً ضد الدور الذي لعبته الولايات المتحدة في تمويل وتسليح وتوفير الغطاء الدبلوماسي لمثل هذه الجريمة.
وتحت ضغط المانحين الأثرياء لجامعات النخبة وحملات الكونجرس على حد سواء، قام النواب مرة أخرى باتباع المكارثية المتعفنة . كنتيجة لذلك، استقالت رئيستا جامعة هارفارد وجامعة بنسلفانيا - وكلاهما امرأتان، وكانت إحداهن أول رئيسة سوداء مثلية لجامعة هارفارد - مما أدى إلى سيل من عمليات الفصل والإجراءات التأديبية ضد الأساتذة، وخاصة أولئك الذين ليس لديهم مناصب ثابتة، في جميع أنحاء البلاد. منعت بعض الجامعات المجموعات الطلابية التي يقودها الفلسـ طينيـ ون واليـ هود من قيادة الاحتجاجات في الحرم الجامعي، مما أجبر النشطاء على العمل السري وتصعيد التوترات. وسط المخاوف بشأن معاداة السامية، يتجاهل السياسيون والإداريون ووسائل الإعلام حقيقة أن عددًا كبيرًا من الطلاب وأعضاء هيئة التدريس الذين يحتجون على الإبادة الجماعية في غزة هم من اليـ هود.
ومن المثير للقلق أن إدارات الجامعات تتحرك نحو اليمين، وهو اتجاه خطير للغاية نظراً للتهديد الحالي لـ MAGA.
من الواضح أن هذه الهجمات مرتبطة بالهجوم على الانحياز الإيجابي [قوانين لصالح الاقليات من اجل تصحيح اوضاعها السيئة تاريخيًا مثلًا العبودية عند السود] وأزمة ديون الرسوم الدراسية للطلاب. للطلاب مصلحة مباشرة في محاربة الفصل العنصري والاحتلال الإسـ ر ائيـ لي لأن رسومهم تساعد في دفع تكاليف ذلك. هذا هو السبب وراء قيام المنظمات الطلابية في جميع أنحاء البلاد بإصدار قرارات سحب الاستثمارات.
ركزت جلسات الاستماع الأخيرة في الكونجرس الأسبوع الماضي على جامعة كولومبيا في مدينة نيويورك، حيث تم حظر كل من منظمة طلاب من أجل العدالة في فلسـ طيـ ن و منظمة الصوت اليهـ ودي من أجل السلام. نعمت شفيق، أول رئيسة أمريكية عربية لكولومبيا، ذبلت تحت وابل من الأسئلة السخيفة. وكما يتضح من الدعم الصريح لجلسات الاستماع هذه من قبل اليمين المتطرف، هناك أجندة سياسية لإلقاء اللوم على سياسة التنوع والمساواة والشمول في الجامعة في موجة الدعم لفلسـ طيـ ن، وكذلك لمساواة الدعم لفلسـ طيـ ن بالإرهاب. ونلاحظ أن هذا ليس هجومًا على التعليم العالي يقوده أمريكيون يهـ ود مؤيدون لإسـ ر ائيـ ل، بل يقوده رجال الأعمال الكبار والصـ هايـ نة المسيحيون ويمين MAGA.
النائبة الوحيدة التي سألت نعمت شفيق عن سلامة المتظاهرين المسلمين والعرب في الحرم الجامعي هي إلهان عمر. في اليوم التالي، تم إيقاف ابنة الهان عمر، إسراء حرسي، طالبة السنة الثانية في جامعة برنارد، من دخول الحرم الجامعي وطردها من السكن الطلابي، مع اثنين من المنظمين الطلابيين الآخرين. في وقت لاحق من ذلك اليوم، استدعت الجامعة مجموعة الاستجابة الإستراتيجية التابعة لشرطة نيويورك، وهي فرقة لمكافحة الإرهاب تستخدم بشكل أساسي لقمع الاحتجاجات، والتي اعتقلت أكثر من 100 طالب في مخيم الاحتجاج الذي أقيم منذ يوم واحد في كولومبيا. ردًا على ذلك، تم إطلاق المزيد من المعسكرات في جامعات أخرى في جميع أنحاء البلاد، بما في ذلك المزيد في نيويورك. اضرب أكثر من 2000 من أعضاء هيئة التدريس والموظفين في جامعة كولومبيا يوم الاثنين للاحتجاج على الاعتقالات الجماعية لطلابهم، كما دعا العديدين منهم جامعة كولومبيا إلى سحب استثماراتها من آلة الحرب الإسرائيلية. إذا كان أمناء جامعة كولومبيا يسعون إلى وقف التصعيد، أو ضمان سلامة الطلاب، أو حتى العودة إلى العمل كالمعتاد، فإن حملتهم القمعية حققت العكس تمامًا.
التعليم الجامعي لا يتم تعلمه فقط في الفصول الدراسية. يعد الطلاب والشباب قوى ديناميكية للتغيير في المجتمع، كما يتضح من دورهم التاريخي في الحركات الاحتجاجية من أجل السلام والحقوق المدنية والديمقراطية في الولايات المتحدة وأماكن أخرى. يحاول الرأسماليون والإمبرياليون و المنتخبون من قبلهم قمع مثل هذه الحركات، من خلال تركيز جهودهم على الشباب، وبالتالي على مؤسساتهم المجتمعية والتعليمية، وكذلك أماكن عملهم. لكن الحركات الشبابية والطلابية المطالبة بوقف إطلاق النار وتحرير فلسطين لن يتم قمعها كما أثبتت الاحتجاجات التي اندلعت خلال الأشهر القليلة الماضية. ويجب على حلفائهم في حركات العمال والحقوق المدنية وحركات السلام أن يجعلوا أصواتهم مسموعة!
تتعرض حاكمة نيويورك كاثي هوتشول لضغوط من السياسيين اليمينيين في MAGA والشركات الكبرى لإرسال الحرس الوطني للاستيلاء على جامعة كولومبيا. مثل هذا الخطأ غير القسري سيؤدي إلى كارثة. أدت تعبئة الحرس الوطني ضد الطلاب المحتجين على حرب فيتنام في عام 1970 إلى مذبحة جامعة كينت. وتعد جامعات النخبة مثل كولومبيا وييل مواقع تسعى فيها الطبقة الحاكمة إلى إعداد الجيل القادم من القادة. إن حقيقة رفض هؤلاء الطلاب بصوت عالٍ قبول مثل هذه المهمة تثير القشعريرة في العمود الفقري لأولئك الذين يحافظون على نظام مبني على الحرب والاستغلال. وهم يذكرون البنتاغون ووول ستريت بأن العالم الأفضل ــ عالم مبني على مبادئ السلام والمساواة والديمقراطية ــ ليس ممكناً فحسب، بل إنه ضروري أيضاً.
نحن ندعم الحق الدستوري والديمقراطي للطلاب والشباب والعمال في التنظيم والاحتجاج ضد حرب الإبادة الجماعية التي تقودها إسـ ر ائيـ ل في غـ زة. نحن نشجع القراء على نشر الاخبار بين شبكاتهم الاجتماعية وأصدقائهم وجيرانهم والاتصال بمسؤوليهم المنتخبين ومطالبتهم بوضع حد لهذا العدوان ضد الطلاب والعمال. إننا نكرر مطالب الطلاب والعمال بوقف فوري لإطلاق النار، وكذلك إنهاء الدعم المؤسسي والمادي الأمريكي للاحتلال الإسـ ر ائيـ لي لفلسـ طيـ ن. استمروا في الضغط! في الواقع، اضغطوا اكثر!.
Campus ceasefire protests deserve support: Keep the pressure on! The Communist Party USA salutes the university student protests and occupations as they struggle for a ceasefire in Gaza for divestment from the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Keep the pressure on! We denounce in the strongest possible terms the repression and arrests of the protesters, at Columbia, Yale, NYU the University of Michigan and other universities where hundreds have been jailed and suspended at the behest of university administrators. We support the constitutional and democratic right for students, youth, and workers to organize and protest against the Israeli-led genocidal war in Gaza. We echo their demands for an immediate ceasefire, as well as an end to US institutional and material support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine. U.S. military support for Israel must stop now! This crackdown follows a number of congressional hearings targeting elite private university presidents, professors and trustees. Starting late last year, these hearings have been led by the MAGA-right and claim to be concerned with antisemitism on campus. In reality, they were an effort to silence protests not only against Israel’s genocide in Palestine, but also the role of the United States in financing, arming, and providing diplomatic cover for such a crime. Pressured by wealthy donors to elite universities and congressional campaigns alike, representatives once again dragged out the bloated corpse of McCarthyism. In response, presidents of Harvard and University of Pennsylvania – both women, one of whom was the first queer Black president of Harvard – resigned, triggering an avalanche of firings and disciplinary actions against professors, mainly those without tenure, across the country. Some universities banned Palestinian and Jewish-led student groups leading protests on campus, forcing activists underground and escalating tensions. Amid concerns about antisemitism, politicians, administrators, and media ignore the fact that a significant number of students and faculty protesting against the genocide in Gaza are Jewish. Alarmingly, university administrations are moving to the right, an exceedingly dangerous trend given the ongoing MAGA threat. Clearly these attacks are linked to the attack on affirmative action and the student tuition debt crisis. Students have a direct stake in fighting Israeli apartheid and occupation because their fees help pay for it. This is the reason why student governments are passing divestment resolutions all across the country. The latest congressional hearings last week focused on Columbia University in New York City, where both Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voices for Peace are currently banned. Nemat Shafik, the first Arab American president of Columbia, withered under a barrage of ridiculous questioning. As articulated by the outspoken support of these hearings by the extreme right, there is a political agenda to blame university Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) politics for the wave of support for Palestine, as well as to equate support for Palestine with terrorism. We note that this is not an attack on higher education led by Jewish-Americans who are pro-Israel, but by big business, Christian Zionists, and the MAGA right. The only representative who asked Nemat Shafik about the safety of Muslim and Arab protesters on campus was Ilhan Omar. The next day, Omar’s daughter, Barnard sophomore Isra Hirsi, was suspended from campus and evicted from student housing, along with two other student organizers. Later that day, the university called in the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, a counter-terrorism squad used mainly to crack down on protests, who arrested more than 100 students in their day-old protest encampment at Columbia. In response, more encampments were launched at other universities across the country, including more in New York. More than 2000 members of Columbia faculty and staff walked out on Monday to protest the mass arrests of their students, many also calling for Columbia to divest from the Israeli war machine. If the Columbia trustees were seeking to de-escalate, ensure the safety of the student body, or even return to business as usual, their crackdown accomplished the exact opposite.
University education is not simply learned in the classroom. Students and youth are dynamic forces for change in society, as evidenced by their historic role in protest movements for peace, civil rights, and democracy in the United States and elsewhere. Capitalists, imperialists, and their elected officials on retainer attempt to quell such movements, by focusing their efforts on the youth, and therefore, their institutions of community and learning, as well as their workplaces. But the youth and student movements for a ceasefire and free Palestine will not be quelled as the protests over the last several months have proven. Their allies in the labor, civil rights, and peace movements must make their voices heard!
NY Governor Kathy Hochul is under pressure from MAGA-right politicians and big business to send in the National Guard to take over Columbia University. Such an unforced error would result in disaster. National Guard mobilizations against students protesting the Vietnam war in 1970 resulted in the Kent State massacre. Elite universities like Columbia and Yale are sites of where the ruling class seeks to groom their next generation of leaders. The fact that these students are loudly refusing to accept such a task sends a chill down the spine of those who maintain a system built on war and exploitation. They remind the Pentagon and Wall Street that a better world – one built on the principles of peace, equality, and democracy – is not only possible, but necessary.
We support the constitutional and democratic right for students, youth, and workers to organize and protest against the Israeli-led genocidal war in Gaza. We encourage readers to spread the word among their social networks, friends, and neighbors and to contact their elected officials and demand they put a stop to this aggression against students and workers. We echo student and worker demands for an immediate ceasefire, as well as an end to US institutional and material support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Keep the pressure on! In fact, turn it up!
