San Jose “Hands Off Iran” Protesters Arrested

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA – On April 20th, three peaceful protesters were arrested after a “Hands Off Iran” vigil, which also featured signs and slogans about the genocide in Gaza, outside of a military recruiter’s office in San Jose, California. One of the arrested protesters is a member of the Party of Communists USA.
The San Jose Police Department is accusing the three activists of “misdemeanor vandalism”, all because activists put up stickers. One of the three activists, who is a female, was patted down by a male officer without warning.
This is a violation of civil liberties by the San Jose Police Department – in particular, the right to protest.
The authors of this article echo the demands of local anti-war group San Jose Against War:
1. Drop the charges against the protestors who were cited on April 20, 2024
2. Publicly apologize to the protestors who were cited and to the countless San Jose residents whose rights you have repeatedly violated
3. Immediately reinstate virtual public comments at city council meetings
4. Provide full transparency about how the following decisions were made: the tarping of seats [i.e. preventing attendance – Editors] & the excessive police presence on December 5, 2023, and the sudden barring of virtual public comments at city council meetings
5. Order a timely and unbiased third party investigation into the city’s repeated pattern of unlawful discrimination and denial of rights to its residents so that these harmful decisions and actions never happen again

سان خوسيه، كاليفورنيا ــ في العشرين من إبريل/نيسان، ألقي القبض على ثلاثة متظاهرين سلميين بعد وقفة احتجاجية بعنوان "ارفعوا أيديكم عن إيران"، والتي تضمنت أيضاً لافتات وشعارات حول الإبادة الجماعية في غزة، خارج مكتب التجنيد العسكري في سان خوسيه، كاليفورنيا. أحد المتظاهرين المعتقلين هو عضو في الحزب الشيوعي الأمريكي.
وتتهم إدارة شرطة سان خوسيه النشطاء الثلاثة بارتكاب "جنحة تخريب"، وذلك لأن النشطاء وضعوا ملصقات. وقد قام ضابط بتفتيش إحدى الناشطات الثلاثة، وهي أنثى، دون سابق إنذار.
يعد هذا انتهاكًا للحريات المدنية من قبل قسم شرطة سان خوسيه - ولا سيما الحق في الاحتجاج.
يردد مؤلفو هذا المقال مطالب المجموعة المحلية المناهضة للحرب سان خوسيه ضد الحرب:
1. إسقاط التهم الموجهة ضد المعتصمين الذين تم الاستشهاد بهم في 20 أبريل 2024
2. اعتذر علنًا للمتظاهرين الذين تم الاستشهاد بهم ولعدد لا يحصى من سكان سان خوسيه الذين انتهكت حقوقهم بشكل متكرر

SAN JOSÉ, CALIFORNIA – El 20 de abril, tres manifestantes pacíficos fueron arrestados después de una vigilia de “Manos fuera de Irán”, en la que también aparecieron carteles y consignas sobre el genocidio en Gaza, frente a una oficina de reclutamiento militar en San José, California. Uno de los manifestantes arrestados es miembro del Partido Comunista de Estados Unidos.
El Departamento de Policía de San José acusa a los tres activistas de “delito menor de vandalismo”, todo porque los activistas colocaron pegatinas. Uno de los tres activistas, que es mujer, fue cacheado por un agente sin previo aviso.
Esta es una violación de las libertades civiles por parte del Departamento de Policía de San José, en particular, el derecho a protestar.
Los autores de este artículo se hacen eco de las demandas del grupo pacifista local San José Contra la Guerra:
1. Retirar los cargos contra los manifestantes que fueron citados el 20 de abril de 2024.
2. Disculpe públicamente a los manifestantes que fueron citados y a los innumerables residentes de San José cuyos derechos ha violado repetidamente.
