…go beyond words and take action to support women, says Marian Mwango, as Zambia celebrates International Women’s Day

There is a growing movement in Zambia as women take up leadership roles across various sectors, a development that is being hailed as a step forward for the country.

According to Marian Mwango, the Socialist Party (SP) National Women’s League Vice Treasurer, Zambian women are no longer standing on the sidelines but are actively contributing to the nation’s progress.

She noted that women are excelling in business, agriculture, education, and corporate leadership, proving that giving women space to lead drives national development.

Ms Mwango highlighted the contributions of market women at Soweto, who wake up before dawn to support their families, as well as young entrepreneurs in Kitwe striving to build tech startups.

She also mentioned nurses in Chipata working tirelessly to save lives and farmers in Mazabuka who are ensuring food security for the nation.

She emphasized that every day, these women are demonstrating that the country advances when they are given opportunities.

Ms Mwango acknowledged the challenges women have faced, such as outdated beliefs and limited opportunities, stating that the systems in place were not originally designed with women in mind.

However, she commended their resilience in overcoming these obstacles.

Citing author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Mwango noted that society had traditionally encouraged girls to shrink themselves, but Zambian women had defied this norm and taken charge of their own futures.

Ms Mwango stressed that women had stopped waiting for a seat at the table and had instead begun creating their own spaces while supporting others along the way.

Despite these achievements, she asserted that more needed to be done, calling for increased female participation in land ownership, corporate leadership, and politics.

As Zambia celebrates International Women’s Day, she has urged society to go beyond words and take action to support women.

She encouraged people to promote women, vote for them, mentor young girls, and create opportunities for future generations.

Ms Mwango concluded by affirming that when Zambian women rise, the entire nation benefits, and this movement is only just beginning.

هناك حركة متزايدة في زامبيا حيث تتولى النساء أدوارًا قيادية في مختلف القطاعات، وهو تطور يُنظر إليه على أنه خطوة إيجابية نحو تقدم البلاد.

وفقًا لماريان موانغو، نائبة أمينة المالية لرابطة النساء الوطنية في الحزب الاشتراكي (SP)، لم تعد النساء الزامبيات يقفن على الهامش، بل أصبحن يساهمن بنشاط في تقدم الأمة.

وأشارت إلى أن النساء يحققن نجاحات في مجالات الأعمال والزراعة والتعليم والقيادة في الشركات، مما يثبت أن منح النساء مساحة للقيادة يعزز التنمية الوطنية.

وسلطت السيدة موانغو الضوء على مساهمات النساء في سوق سويتو، اللواتي يستيقظن قبل الفجر لإعالة أسرهن، وكذلك رواد الأعمال الشباب في كيتوي الذين يسعون لبناء شركات ناشئة في مجال التكنولوجيا.

كما أشادت بالممرضات في شيباتا اللاتي يعملن بلا كلل لإنقاذ الأرواح، والمزارعات في مازابوكا اللواتي يساهمن في تحقيق الأمن الغذائي للبلاد.

وأكدت أن هؤلاء النساء يُثبتن كل يوم أن تقدم البلاد يتحقق عندما تُتاح لهن الفرص.

واعترفت السيدة موانغو بالتحديات التي واجهتها النساء، مثل المعتقدات القديمة والفرص المحدودة، مشيرةً إلى أن الأنظمة القائمة لم تُصمم في الأصل مع مراعاة احتياجات المرأة.

ومع ذلك، أثنت على صمودهن في التغلب على هذه العقبات.

واستشهدت بالكاتبة شيماماندا نغوزي أديتشي، مشيرةً إلى أن المجتمع كان يشجع الفتيات تقليديًا على التقليل من شأن أنفسهن، لكن النساء الزامبيات تحدّين هذا النمط وأخذن زمام أمور مستقبلهن بأيديهن.

وشددت السيدة موانغو على أن النساء توقفن عن انتظار الحصول على مقعد على الطاولة، وبدأن في إنشاء مساحاتهن الخاصة مع دعم الأخريات في طريقهن.

ورغم هذه الإنجازات، أكدت أن هناك المزيد مما يجب القيام به، داعيةً إلى زيادة مشاركة النساء في ملكية الأراضي والقيادة في الشركات والسياسة.

ومع احتفال زامبيا باليوم الدولي للمرأة، دعت المجتمع إلى تجاوز الكلمات واتخاذ إجراءات فعلية لدعم النساء.

وحثت الجميع على ترقية النساء، والتصويت لهن، وتوجيه الفتيات الصغيرات، وخلق الفرص للأجيال القادمة.

واختتمت السيدة موانغو بالتأكيد على أنه عندما تنهض النساء الزامبيات، تستفيد الأمة بأكملها، وأن هذه الحركة لم تبدأ سوى الآن.
