DR FRED M’MEMBE DESERVES THE SUPPORT OF ALL WELL-MEANING ZAMBIANS – KATANEKWA
Socialist Party (SP) Member of the Central Committee (MCC), Harriet Bwalya Mulenga Katanekwa, has appealed to all well-meaning Zambians to stand together in defence of the country’s democracy, sovereignty and fundamental democratic freedoms.
Ms Katanekwa said Zambia was at a critical moment that required citizens to rise above political affiliations and collectively defend the democratic values upon which the country was founded.
Commenting on remarks made by former Botswana President General Ian Khama, Ms Katanekwa acknowledged that diplomatic engagement would have been the ideal approach in addressing the concerns raised. However, she questioned why some UPND supporters had resorted to insulting and attacking General Khama instead of responding to the issues he had raised.
She challenged the UPND to demonstrate leadership and maturity by respecting established government protocols and diplomatic processes, stating that those in government must be able to handle criticism and disagreements in a responsible and dignified manner.
Ms Katanekwa further expressed concern over the composition of the recently appointed Cabinet, arguing that it fell short of the principles of inclusivity that the government had previously championed.
She noted that women account for less than 15 per cent of the Cabinet, while young people and persons living with disabilities have also been left without meaningful representation.
She questioned the government's commitment to inclusive governance, arguing that inclusion should not merely be used as a political talking point but must be reflected in actual appointments and decision-making structures.
Ms Katanekwa concluded by calling on Zambians to rally behind leaders who have demonstrated courage, conviction and responsible leadership during these difficult times.
She said Dr Fred M’membe deserves the support of all well-meaning Zambians because of his willingness to speak out against injustice, challenge wrongdoing and defend democratic principles, particularly at a time when individuals who question the actions of those in power increasingly find themselves targeted.
She emphasised that defending democracy should not be the responsibility of opposition political parties alone, but a collective responsibility of every Zambian who believes in justice, accountability, equality and the rule of law.
“Zambia belongs to all of us, and its democracy must be protected by all of us. We must stand with those who have the courage to speak when others choose to remain silent.”

ناشدت هارييت بواليا مولينجا كاتانيكوا، عضو اللجنة المركزية للحزب الاشتراكي (SP)، جميع الزامبيين المخلصين للوقوف صفًا واحدًا دفاعًا عن ديمقراطية البلاد وسيادتها وحرياتها الديمقراطية الأساسية.
وقالت السيدة كاتانيكوا إن زامبيا تمر بمرحلة حرجة تتطلب من المواطنين التسامي فوق الانتماءات السياسية والدفاع بشكل جماعي عن القيم الديمقراطية التي تأسست عليها البلاد.
وفي معرض تعليقها على التصريحات التي أدلى بها رئيس بوتسوانا السابق، الجنرال إيان خاما، أقرت السيدة كاتانيكوا بأن التواصل الدبلوماسي كان ليكون النهج الأمثل للتعامل مع المخاوف المثارة. ومع ذلك، تساءلت عن سبب لجوء بعض أنصار حزب الاتحاد الموحد للتنمية الوطنية (UPND) الحاكم إلى إهانة ومهاجمة الجنرال خاما بدلاً من الرد على القضايا التي أثارها.
وتحدت حزب (UPND) الحاكم لإظهار القيادة والنضج من خلال احترام البروتوكولات الحكومية والعمليات الدبلوماسية المعمول بها، مشيرة إلى أن الموجودين في السلطة يجب أن يكونوا قادرين على التعامل مع النقد والخلافات بطريقة مسؤولة وكريمة.
علاوة على ذلك، أعربت السيدة كاتانيكوا عن قلقها إزاء تشكيلة مجلس الوزراء المعين مؤخرًا، معتبرة أنها قصرت عن تحقيق مبادئ الشمولية التي نادت بها الحكومة سابقًا.
وأشارت إلى أن النساء يمثلن أقل من 15 في المائة من مجلس الوزراء، في حين تُرِك الشباب والأشخاص ذوو الإعاقة دون تمثيل حقيقي وملموس.
وشككت في التزام الحكومة بالحكم الشامل، جازمة بأن الشمولية لا ينبغي أن تُستخدم مجرد شعار سياسي للاستهلاك الإعلامي، بل يجب أن تنعكس في التعيينات الفعلية وهياكل صنع القرار.
واختتمت السيدة كاتانيكوا بالدعوة إلى التفاف الزامبيين حول القادة الذين أظهروا الشجاعة والقناعة والقيادة المسؤولة خلال هذه الأوقات العصيبة.
وقالت إن د. فريد ميمبي يستحق دعم جميع الزامبيين المخلصين بسبب استعداده لرفع صوته ضد الظلم، وتحدي الأخطاء، والدفاع عن المبادئ الديمقراطية، لاسيما في وقت يجد فيه الأفراد الذين يشككون في تصرفات من هم في السلطة أنفسهم مستهدفين بشكل متزايد.
وشددت على أن الدفاع عن الديمقراطية لا ينبغي أن يكون مسؤولية أحزاب المعارضة السياسية وحدها، بل هو مسؤولية جماعية لكل زامبي يؤمن بالعدالة، والمساءلة، والمساواة، وسيادة القانون.
وأضافت: "إن زامبيا ملك لنا جميعاً، وديمقراطيتها يجب أن يحميها الجميع. يجب أن نقف مع أولئك الذين يملكون الشجاعة للتحدث عندما يختار الآخرون البقاء صامتين".
