Statement on the result of referendum to amend the Constitution

The result of the double rejection of the government’s proposed amendments to the Constitution was not totally unexpected. The government tried to gain favour by removing outdated concepts of the family and the domestic role of women from the Constitution, while at the same time trying to place all responsibility for care within the family unit, completely absolving the state of any responsibility towards women as the primary caregivers, the disabled community, and other vulnerable members of society.
The Care amendment was motivated by the discredited ideology of Thatcherism which proclaimed that “there is no such thing as society”. The wording of the proposed amendment, placing the responsibility for the provision of care within the family unit, could not be considered a win for women in a struggle for more equal rights, as it is women who will continue to shoulder the bulk of domestic and caring responsibilities.
Proper and wide-ranging state funded services for families are a necessity for the liberation of women, and to support individuals with additional needs, throughout their life or at any stage in it, such services are critical to facilitate their full participation within our society. This is how we move towards a more equal Ireland, as envisioned in the 1916 Proclamation.
The results rejecting both the Family and Care amendments do not mean that the people accept the current constitutional wording, but rather it is a rejection of the anti-people policies of this aggressive pro-capital, pro-big business neoliberal government.
Our people want housing, not excuses. There is a clear majority in support of building more public housing and placing restrictions on vulture funds investing in our housing stock. The people want rent controls and tenure protections, more regulation of landlords, and the barring of corporate vulture funds. They want a decent public health service, instead of the present situation which sees people suffering on long waiting lists or receiving medical care in a hospital corridor on a trolly or a chair. People are tired of being ignored when they ask questions and want answers about issues that may affect their communities, issues which all centre on a lack of properly funded services in their communities. They support neutrality and want a stronger position on the genocide in Gaza, and they are no longer impressed by our “partners in the EU”.
No doubt the establishment media and middle-class professional NGO sector, which has been hopelessly compromised for decades and perceived by many working people as conduits for imposing government policies, will criticise the people for making the “wrong” decision, which begs the question ‘the wrong decision for whom?’
The result is a clear warning to those parties and organisations who claim to be on the “left” that politics is more than trendy soundbites; that social policies are not the same as class politics. Real change will not come from the current institutions of power. It will only come by the mobilisation and radicalisation of the working class.
The many problems that our people face will not be solved within the institutions and the economic system that causes them. What is needed is a radical transformative strategy centred on the needs and interests of the working class.

Declaración sobre el resultado del referéndum para modificar la Constitución el 03/10/2024 El resultado del doble rechazo de las enmiendas a la Constitución propuestas por el gobierno no fue totalmente inesperado. El gobierno trató de ganarse el favor eliminando de la Constitución los conceptos obsoletos de la familia y el papel doméstico de la mujer, mientras que al mismo tiempo intentaba colocar toda la responsabilidad del cuidado dentro de la unidad familiar, absolviendo completamente al Estado de cualquier responsabilidad hacia las mujeres como tal. los cuidadores primarios, la comunidad discapacitada y otros miembros vulnerables de la sociedad. La enmienda Care fue motivada por la desacreditada ideología del thatcherismo que proclamaba que “no existe la sociedad”. O governo tentou ganhar favores retirando da Constituição conceitos ultrapassados de família e do papel doméstico das mulheres, ao mesmo tempo que tentava colocar toda a responsabilidade pelos cuidados dentro da unidade familiar, absolvendo completamente o Estado de qualquer responsabilidade para com as mulheres como os cuidadores principais, a comunidade com deficiência e outros membros vulneráveis da sociedade. A alteração Care foi motivada pela ideologia desacreditada do Thatcherismo, que proclamava que “não existe sociedade”. This International Working Women’s Day the Communist Party of Ireland stands in solidarity with working women in Ireland and all women across the world suffering super exploitation, gender-based violence, and because of war. We salute the many tens of thousands of working women who are active in their trade union, community groups, social campaigns, as well as bearing an disproportionate responsibility for family and caring duties.
This year, we particularly salute the women of occupied Palestine suffering the most horrendous and barbaric violence and genocide in Gaza and the West Bank at the hands of the Zionist occupation army of the apartheid settler colonial state of “Israel”. And those women in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, displaced from their homes and towns or forced into slave labour in the extractive industries, as neocolonialism ravages the African continent. Deliberate famines in these regions have created some of the most brutal conditions for people, but particularly for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. It is a collective failure of humanity and the institutions of the West to prevent the intentional starvation of this vulnerable group.
To the women engaged in the struggle to transform and build socialism in countries like Cuba, Việt Nam, the People’s Republic of China and other progressive states, we express our profound solidarity.
Millions of women experience repression and gender-based violence from living under reactionary social and political structures. The ruling classes across the world and here in Ireland are attempting to co-opt this important day in the lives of working women to neutralise the radical class-based anti-imperialist politics that have underpinned organised events across the world on March 8th for over a century.
While many will go out today in Ireland to vote in the two amendments to the constitution, we need to re-emphasise that the Care amendment is a cynical manoeuvring by a bankrupt establishment, reinforced by the Thatcherite Taoiseach’s statement during the week that he doesn’t believe the state has a responsibility to provide care. We forcefully reject this.
What is needed is a root and branch radical transformation of our country. We need a new constitution that reflects those profoundly needed changes. A new constitution that places at its centre the needs and interests of working people. One that enshrines democratic ownership and control of all wealth and the means of creating wealth. A constitution that is non-sexist, non-sectarian, a constitution that enshrines the democratic rights of all. A constitution that values all our citizens equally.
