في 12 ماي 1916، نفذت القوات البريطانية حكم الإعدام بحق الثوري الإيرلندي، والقيادي النقابي، وأحد أبرز منظمي الحركة الاشتراكية جيمس كونولي.
ولا يزال يُستحضر إلى اليوم باعتباره إحدى الشخصيات الرمزية في تاريخ الحركة العمالية الإيرلندية والنضال من أجل الاستقلال.
في سنة 1896 أسس حزب العمل الاشتراكي (Socialist Labour Party)، ثم قام سنة 1913 بتأسيس “الجيش المواطن الإيرلندي” (Irish Citizen Army)، وهو تنظيم مسلح ومدرَّب أُنشئ لحماية العمال والمضربين.
وكان كونولي أحد القادة الرئيسيين لانتفاضة عيد الفصح التاريخية سنة 1916 (Easter Rising). وقد شكّل هذا التمرد المسلح ضد الحكم البريطاني منعطفاً مهماً في تاريخ حركة الاستقلال الإيرلندية.
وبعد قمع الانتفاضة، اعتُقل وهو في حالة إصابة خطيرة. ثم قامت القوات البريطانية بإعدامه رمياً بالرصاص في دبلن. وتشير المصادر التاريخية إلى أنه، بسبب إصاباته، نُفذ فيه حكم الإعدام وهو جالس على كرسي.
ولا تزال مختلف التنظيمات التقدمية والعمالية في إيرلندا والعالم تستحضر جيمس كونولي بوصفه رمزاً فريداً لنضال الطبقة العاملة من أجل التحرر والاستقلال الوطني.
May 12: Death Anniversary of Irish Socialist Leader James Connolly
On May 12, 1916, the British Army executed Irish revolutionary, trade union leader, and one of the foremost organizers of the socialist movement, James Connolly.
He is still remembered today as one of the most iconic figures in the history of the Irish labor movement and the struggle for independence.
In 1896, he founded the Socialist Labour Party. Later, in 1913, he established the Irish Citizen Army, an armed and trained force created to protect workers and striking laborers.
Connolly was also one of the principal leaders of the historic Easter Rising of 1916. This armed rebellion against British rule marked a major turning point in the history of the Irish independence movement.
After the uprising was suppressed, he was captured while seriously wounded. He was later executed by firing squad in Dublin by British forces. Historical accounts state that, because of his injuries, he was tied to a chair while the execution was carried out.
To this day, progressive and labor organizations in Ireland and around the world commemorate James Connolly as a unique symbol of the working class struggle for liberation and national independence.
